The Wielkopolski is a breed of horse that was originated in Central and Western Poland in 1964, so it is still relatively young. It was developed by crossing two now extinct Polish breeds, the Pozan (bred at the Posadowo, Racot and Gogolewo studs) and the Masuren (bred at the Liski stud), so it is also referred to as the Mazursko-Poznanski. The Waler is an Australian working horse breed that originated from the horse stock that was brought to the Australian colonies in the 1800s. The name comes from the fact that they were first bred in New South Wales and so were originally known as New South Walers. The waler combined a variety of breeds; notably the Cape horse (from the Cape of Good Hope), English breeds (such as the Thoroughbred, Clydesdale, Percheron and Arab) and the Timor Pony. The Ukrainian Riding Horse, a relatively new breed developed in Ukraine after World War II to meet the ever-increasing demand for sport horses, was first bred at the Dnepropetrovsk stud. The Turkoman horse, or Turkmene, was an ancient breed from Turkmenistan, now extinct. Modern representatives include the Akhal-Teke and the Yamud.
