The Paso Fino is a beautiful, naturally-gaited horse with a history dating back many centuries to Spain. The Paso Fino is a mix of the Barb, Spanish Jennet, and Andalusian horse and was bred by Spanish land owners in Puerto Rico and Colombia to be used in the plantations because of their endurance and the comfortable ride they provided. The Puerto Rican Paso Fino has several different body types from quite small and refined to very large and powerful. The Colombian Paso Fino is also found in varying body types. The action of the two strains is somewhat different with the Pure Puerto Rican Paso fino prized for its fine or delicate step while the Colombian Paso fino tends to have more of a piston-like action. read full article…
Palomino is a coat color in horses, consisting of a gold coat and white or flaxen mane and tail. Genetically, the palomino color is created by a dilution gene working on a red (chestnut) base coat. While the breed standard states the ideal color is that of a “newly minted gold coin” (sometimes mistakenly claimed to be a penny), the coat color may range from a pale creme, almost-white color, to a deep, dark, chocolate color (”chocolate palomino”). Skin and eyes are usually dark. White markings are permitted on the legs, but must not extend beyond the knees or hocks. Orlov trotter (also known as Orlov; Russian: орловский рысак) is a horse breed with a hereditary fast trot credited for its outstanding speed and stamina. It is the most famous Russian horse. The breed was raised in Russia in the beginning of the 19th century in the Khrenovsky stud-farm near the town of Bobrov (Voronezh guberniya) under the supervision of its owner Count Alexei Orlov (hence the name). The Fjord horse (known in Norway as a fjording) is a small breed of horse from the mountainous regions of western Norway. It ranges from 137 cm to 147 cm (approximately 13.2 to 14.2 hands) in height and weighs from 400 to 550 kilograms (about 882 to 1210 lb.), which classifies it as a pony according to international rules (though it is always called a horse in Norway). This breed is one of the world’s oldest and purest breeds. It is believed that the ancestors of the Fjord horse migrated to Norway and were domesticated over 4,000 years ago. Norlandshest/Lyngshest is the smallest of the three Norwegian horse breeds. Translated to English the name is horse from Nordland/ Lyngen. The breed known today originated in Lyngen, but was given the name Nordlandshest in 1968 by breeders in that area of the country. A compromise was later reached as the name change was hotly disputed by breeders in Lyngen and surrounding areas, and today the official name of the breed is Nordlandshest/Lyngshest. read full article…
The Nez Perce Horse is a horse breed of the Nez Perce tribe of Idaho. The program began in 1995 in Lapwai, Idaho and is based on crossbreeding the Appaloosa and a Central Asian breed called Akhal-Teke. This program seeks to re-establish the horse culture of the Nez Perce, a proud tradition of selective breeding and horsemanship that was destroyed in the 19th century. The breeding program was financed by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the Nez Perce tribe and a nonprofit group called the First Nations Development Institute, which promotes such businesses. read full article…
