The Caspian Pony was rediscovered in 1965 in a mountainous region of Northern Iran, not far from the Caspian Sea, by American Louise Firouz. Firouz was searching for small ponies to be ridden by children, when she happened upon a bay stallion in the town of Amol. The horse was pulling a heavy cart, and was nicely conformed with the body of a “well-bred oriental horse.” She purchased the stallion, naming him Ostad, and he became a successful sire of children’s ponies and a foundation for her breeding program. Finding that the animals were few in number and in poor condition, she began a breeding program at her riding school in Norouzabad, starting with seven mares and six stallions. read full article…
The Burmese Pony originated in the Shan state of Eastern Burma, where it is bred today by local tribes. It shows similarities to the Bhutia, Spiti, and Manipuri ponies of the Himalayan Mountains, suggesting these breed have a similar origin, most likely deriving from the Mongolian horse and other Eastern breeds. read full article…
The Bhutia Pony originated in the Himalayan region of India. It is similar to the Spiti Pony and the native Tibetan Pony, as these animals have been interbred for years so that many of the individual characteristics have been lost, and are now all categorized as “Indian Country Bred.” It is now found in the Buhtan, Sikkim and Darjeeling regions of India. read full article…
The Batak Pony is an Indonesian breed. Originating in Central Sumatra, it is thought to have descended from Mongolian Horse and Arabian blood, and has continually been infused with Arabian blood throughout the century to improve its quality.
