A Kreisel Tank is a circular fish tank designed to hold delicate animals. Originally a German design, the tank is designed to have no sharp corners. A circular design keeps the housed animals away from the plumbing and slowly circulating in the tank.
There are several types of kreisel tanks. First there is the “true” kreisel, a perfectly circular tank with a circular, submerged, lid. The intake for the true-kreisel is usually constructed out of compartmentalized plastic slots. The intake is accompanied by a chamber of water where the outflow of the pump is connected. Next, there are pseudo-kreisels. These kreisels are shaped like the letter “U” and almost always feature a spray bar for the intake. Some can utilize slot-type intake like true kreisels, instead of a spray bar. Finally there is the combination of the two, a “simple” kreisel. With this design you have a circular shaped tank, but with no lid or cover. Instead the surface of the water acts as the continuation of circular flow, this may not be beneficial to some animals though as it exposes them to air.
