They are made up by the dorsal spinal processes of the first 5 to 9 thoracic vertebrae (every horse has 18 thoracic vertebrae), which are unusually long in this area and are less than 6″ in height on the withers of the average horse. Winged cats is a term for sightings or descriptions of cats with supposedly wing-like appendages. There are three different causes of wing-like appendages. The most common is longhaired cats having matted fur. Felted mats of fur can form along the body and flanks if a longhaired cat is not properly groomed. Less commonly, mats can occur in shorthaired cats if molted fur adheres to growing fur over several seasons. White dog shaker syndrome causes full body tremors in small, white dog breeds. It is most common in West Highland White Terriers, Maltese, Bichons, and Poodles. There is a sudden onset of the disease at one to two years of age. It is worse at times of stress. Nystagmus, difficulty walking, and seizures may occur in some dogs. The cause is unknown, but it may be mediated by the immune system. Treatment with corticosteroids may put the dog into remission, or diazepam may control the symptoms. Cheyletiellosis is a mild dermatitis caused by the Cheyletiella species of mites. It is also known as walking dandruff. Cheyletiella are large mites that live on the skin surface of dogs, cats, rabbits, and humans. They do not burrow into the skin but live in the keratin level. Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome (VKH syndrome) is a condition seen in humans and dogs characterized by uveitis (inflammation of the inside of the eye), poliosis (whitening of hair), vitiligo (loss of pigment in the skin), and meningitis, although dogs with this syndrome rarely develop meningitis. It is also known as uveodermatologic syndrome. In humans there is a higher rate of VKH syndrome in people of Asian, Latin, and Mediterranean descent.
