Summary: Could have been more hard-hitting...
Comment: As a person who has been involved in animal rescue/rights for nearly two decades, I believe this film is rather vanilla. While it does convey the serious problem of pet overpopulation, it is not hard-hitting enough. The problem I have with this documentary, and others that are similar, is that it is not graphic enough. People need to be slapped out of their collective stupor. It did not show the euthanasia of Oreo as part of the documentary. You could see it as a "special feature." I believe it should have been part of the documentary. People need to be educated and they need to see it. And, the footage of the euthanasia was not graphic enough. The camera just focused on the syringe and not on the cat as she took her last breath and went limp. It cuts from the syringe to the lifeless cat lying on the table. People need to see these things! It is unpleasant to watch but these things should not be sugarcoated. on another note, David Duchovny was a decent narrator, perhaps a little monotone, but otherwise ok. If you are involved in animal rescue, this documentary won't tell you anything you don't know already. If you are a layperson, not involved in animal rescue, I suppose it conveys the message but it definitely spares you from the harsh realities.

Summary: An Amazing Program!
Comment: I bought this DVD based on the reviews and I was blown away by the quality and informative nature of this issue. It is without a doubt the best documentary I have watched. I thought the comedy shorts were hysterical, especially "The Dog Walker". I highly recommend buying this DVD. If Amazon is out of stock it is also available from PBS.

Summary: Best Documentary on Pet Overpopulation Ever!
Comment: Anyone who owns cats & dogs MUST watch this program. It is very powerful and the way it shows the animals point of view of being abandoned truly captures your hearts. It shows the importance of adopting and not buying from a pet store and on spaying and neutering. Plus it explains the tradgey of feral (wild) cats, I was taken back when they showed this problem as I have performed TNR with 20 feral cats in my area. I highly recommend this video.

Summary: Exceptional!
Comment: If you care about animals, this is a must-see documentary. It is both a well-told, compelling story and a very educational hour. Actor David Duchovny's narration is compassionate and humorous when appropriate. It's obvious director Julie Lofton put her heart and soul into this project, and hopefully, "Best Friend Forgotten" will make people think seriously about the consequences of pet overpopulation in this country. Warning: after watching this film, you may be overcome with an urge to adopt a homeless pet! Also, check out the DVD extras, especially the comedy shorts, "Uncommon Census" and "The Dog Walker". The rather frightening dog walker is none other than Lofton herself, although she is much cuter in person.

Summary: I got a sneak preview
Comment: I got a sneak preview of this film at a screening in Charlotte NC. It is so good. I also heard about it when Ellen Degeneres and David Duchovny were talking about it on her show a month ago. If you haven't gotten to see it on PBS I definitly reccomend buying it. It's a must have for anyone who likes/loves dogs and cats.
